SARAH DANES JARRETT

She emigrated to Zimbabwe with her parents in1966. In 1985, Sarah received a graphic design diploma. Following a boyfriend, she arrived in South Africa in 1988, where she still lives and works, in Wynberg. She left her design career in 1998, when she became a mother and started painting in 2000. She describes her large scale colourful paintings as naturalistic. After sketching the face onto the canvas with a khoki (fibre-tip) pen, she uses bright and even fluorescent acrylic paint, with a block-work brush style, and ends with her tube of white. A flat white background neatens up the final artwork.
Sarah’s work is collected and exhibited worldwide: Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, England, America, Sweden, Austria, the Middle East, Africa …
Her bright portraits are strong, imperious, colourful,
with usually confrontational eyes. She paints faces with
a certain attitude. She doesn’t feel the need to put a message in her work and she doesn’t portray children,
as they are too soft and ‘un-lived’. Mostly feminine vulnerability and tenderness, with soulful eyes, is depicted through aggressive brush strokes, forming soft curves.
